The Beautiful Legacy of Andrea Wyckoff: Hope, Healing, & Inspiration

Ironically, the birth of Starch-Free Feasting resulted from the passing of my dear friend, Andrea Wyckoff.

Discouragement.

I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in 2019. I struggled during the early months after my diagnosis. Because of a long waitlist to see a rheumatologist for an initial appointment, I lived with severe inflammation 24/7. I had no access to the medication to reduce my pain. I was desperate to find relief so that I could care for my family.

A kind stranger introduced me to the concept of a no/low-starch diet for ankylosing spondylitis. I started a strict elimination diet not long after learning about this dietary approach to managing AS. The foodie in me was in agony. Would I ever enjoy indulging in delicious foods again?

Hope.

During that painful time, I stumbled upon Andrea’s website. Her story proved to me that, in fact, it was possible to thrive on a restricted diet. Even though I did not know Andrea at the time, her work inspired me. Her journey, recipes, and generous kindness spoke to my heart.

Countless visits to her website turned into shameless stalking. Graciously, Andrea replied to my calls for help (as she did with many other people). Soon, we connected quickly and easily. She made me feel validated when few other people had validated my invisible disease. Her story of healing instilled hope and courage.

Andrea’s success with diet allowed me to dream. Soon, her recipes became a staple in my early days of post-elimination reintroductions. Her work opened up a new world of possibilities for me. I was inspired and motivated!

“…a full and joyful life can quite easily be lived hand in hand with a diet of feasting and healing.

Dreams.

In 2021, Andrea and I both shared about our starch-free healing journeys through a column published by ankylosingspondylitisnews.com. At that time we started dreaming of creating a website together. Above all, it was our goal to inspire others on their unique healing journeys. We desired to share encouragement and inspiration. Together, we hoped to continue the work she had been doing by herself for years.

Andrea’s life ended suddenly due to a tragic motor vehicle accident in September of 2021.

A Rich Legacy.

During her lifetime, Andrea made remarkable contributions to the ankylosing spondylitis community. She was a trailblazer who selflessly imparted knowledge to others suffering from AS. She helped turn grief and fear into hope and optimism. I, and many others, would not be where we are today if it was not for her selfless dedication to helping perfect strangers.

The motivation behind the birth of Starch-Free Feasting was, in part, so that Andrea’s work can continue to inspire and bring hope. Andrea’s family has generously shared her beautiful recipe collection in an effort to help keep her legacy alive.

So, dear friend, make yourself at home.

Go ahead and indulge in the recipes (including Andrea’s!) on Starch-Free Feasting

This is a place of feasting!
